At Pinchmill Primary School, we believe that children become confident and successful writers when they have something meaningful to say, something interesting to write about and the skills to communicate their ideas effectively. Our approach to writing is built around the principles of implementation, inspiration and intent, ensuring that writing is purposeful, engaging and rooted in rich experiences.

Our Intent

Our intention is to develop children who see themselves as writers and who are confident in expressing their thoughts, ideas, imagination and experiences through the written word. We want our children to develop a love of language and literature while building the knowledge and skills they need to become effective, independent writers.

We expose children to a wide range of high-quality literature, using carefully chosen books, authors and texts as a stimulus for writing. Literature provides children with rich vocabulary, exciting ideas, strong models of writing and opportunities to explore different characters, settings, themes and perspectives.

Alongside literature, we recognise the importance of first-hand experiences. We use practical activities, physical experiences, drama, exploration and real-life situations to engage and inspire children. These experiences give children something to draw upon when they write. Whether they are exploring a setting, taking part in a practical challenge, creating a character, investigating an object or physically experiencing an event, children are given opportunities to develop ideas before putting them onto paper.
